Isotope dating of lava flows and tephra layers interstratified with glacial deposits on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, indicate that four episodes of ice cap glaciation culminated about 20,000, 55,000, 135,000, and 250,000 years ago, which are correlated with marine isotope stages 2, 4, 6, and 8, marking times of high global ice volume.
