Summary:
This paper asks the question, "How old are the volcanoes in Hawaii?" While it was initially believed that Mauna Kea, for example, was probably active for at least 1 million years, a new age for Mauna Kea of approximately 400,000 years was determined after a 3,464-foot hole was drilled deep into volcanic rock near the city of Hilo. However, since scientists have been able to drill through only one-sixth of the lava, it is hoped that by drilling all the way to the base of the volcano, and by analyzing the core in the lab using isotopes, that it will be possible to date the lava more precisely.
