Summary:
Lake Waiau is a heart-shaped, shallow body of water that is less than 1 hectare in area that is located at the 3969 meter elevation on the summit plateau of Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii. The diatom species inhabiting this lake, over a period of several thousand years, have been identified where an unusually high incidence of morphological variation was found. This led to the discovery of a new, possibly endemic species, known as Stauroneis maunakeansis.
