Summary:
They're not "chemical weapons", but a former health official worried that artillery practice at the Pohakuloa Training Area, (PTA), that is located the island of Hawaii, could poison soldiers and children who live downwind of the PTA on the Kohala Coast. This concern came as high levels of elemental pollutants such as aluminum, arsenic, beryllium, and lead were found to have accumulated around some sites in a firing range at the PTA. As a result, this site became an area of controversy as the U.S. Army proposed to vastly expand the live-firing range for a Stryker Brigade Combat Team, an infantry brigade that would be converted into a light armored unit mounted on eight-wheeled Stryker armored vehicles.
