Summary:
In this article, Dr. Robert B. Lane, assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Hawaii, describes a Hawaii Hochi-sponsored field trip, in which he participated, that was made up of University and Bishop Museum scientists who explored the workshops, shelters, and shrines at the 12,000 ft elevation of Mauna Kea where it is believed that the Hawaiians quarried hard rock in an effort to fashion crude tools (adzes). Here the author discusses the significance of the basalt mines, workshops, and shelters that the group explored, in an effort to trace the earliest industrial developments of the Hawaiian islands.
