Summary:
In this document, the author describes a hike that he took in early August, 1977, to the Kohala Mountain that is located on the North end of the island of Hawaii. Here he spent the night at the "New USGS Camp", at which time, he heard bird calls that he was unable to identify due to the darkness of the night. However, it was later suggested that the calls that he heard on that cold, dark night, might have been from a flock of Newell Shearwater (Puffinus p. newelli) that might have been flying to nests in the area.
