Summary:
The number of tourists, who travel to high altitudes, has sharply increased. However, since the incidence of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), (which may be accompanied by the severe, or even fatal, high altitude cerebral or pulmonary edemas), is unknown, the purpose of this study was to: 1) determine the actual incidence of AMS in a population of tourist-hikers -- trekkers as opposed to expedition mountaineers, 2) correlate the illness and its severity with a number of variable thought to influence AMS, and 3) determine how effectively acetazolamide could prevent AMS in such people.
