Summary:
This is an excellent summary of earlier observations of Mauna Kea, including well-written descriptions of the physical features of the mountain and of the glaciation. During the Pleistocene, the mountain top was covered with a glacier cap which extended down to altitudes between 10,550 and 12,500 ft. Terminal, lateral, and ground moraines, and outwash gravels were formed. The latest eruptions of Mauna Kea, all of small volume and areal extent, occurred during glacial times. The paper includes a map of the glacial deposits, good photographs, and a diagram showing the relation of the latest lava flow to outwash gravels.
