- Summary:
- The summit of Mauna Kea, home of the Goddess Poliahu, has become a battle ground for many conflicting and competing uses such as religious worship, scientific research, and recreational activities such as hiking, hunting, skiing, snowboarding, as well as sightseeing and tourism. In an effort to establish an integrated cultural and natural resource management plan for the summit of Mauna Kea, Ka Lahui Hawaii wrote this twelve-page report that briefly describes the historical background and problem areas of Mauna Kea. It includes nine recommendations on how the management and oversight of Mauna Kea should be done under the administration of a Mauna Kea Scientific Reserve Commission. Also included are 14 letters and memorandums from various organizations that state their concerns regarding: the removal and desecration of a sacred ceremonial objects, (such as the hookupu stone), a Historic Preservation Program that would protect Lake Waiau, the Mauna Kea Adze Quarry and areas that are eligible for listing on the National and Hawaii Register of Historic Places, and the protection of the Wekiu bug and other endangered species that live on the summit of Mauna Kea.
