Summary:
Describes adze quarries used by the early Hawaiians on the slopes of Mauna Kea at about 12,500 feet. About seven caves and shelters were located, with places where basalt was roughly shaped by chipping, to be made into adzes. The floor of shelters had grass padding and a few fragments of sea shells. Shrines also were found chiseled from upright stones. One site near the trail from Humuula to the summit of Mauna Kea was called Ke-ana-da doi, "cave of the adzes."
