Summary:
Rock varnish is a dark accretion of clay minerals, manganese, and iron oxides, in addition to over 30 other minor and trace elements, and the tropical rock varnishes that are found on Hualalai and Mauna Kea volcanoes on the island of Hawaii, vary systematically with time and environment. The purpose of this study is to examine time-dependent signals of one low-temperature weathering system, rock varnish, on Hualalai and Mauna Kea.
