Astronomical observatories Mauna Kea controversy
Summary:
This document describes the controversy that exists between the native Hawaiians, to whom Mauna Kea is sacred, and the astronomers who have built telescopes all over its summit. Located on the island of Hawaii, a 12,000 acre science reserve is home to astronomical observatories and satellite stations that are worth more than one billion dollars. However, to the Hawaiian people, this area is the sacred home of their snow goddess, Poliahu.
