Modeling Lake Waiau: a study of stable isotope distribution and water chemistry. May 13, 2001, (student paper)
Year:
2001
Subject:
Lake Waiau Hydrology
Summary:
This student report describes a survey of Lake Waiau hydrology made during August, 2000. Water samples were collected from the lake and chemical composition and relative concentrations of chemical species in the lake water were analysed and compared between 1999 and 2000. Evaporation in 1999, a drought year, yielded an August lake volume that was half the volume in August 2000. Chemical species (expected to be concentrated by evaporation) were higher by a factor of two in August 1999 compared to August 2000. Based on isotopic and chemical composition, Lake Waiau appears to be on an impermeable layer and have no sources of water other than precipitation and runoff.
