Summary:
Throughout the years, archaeologists of the Pacific have become increasingly interested in studying prehistoric trade and exchange with the goal of determining how prehistoric exchange studies have traced the route of exchange as a means of presupposing relationships between various societal groups. While such studies can trace the flow of material between societal groups through space and time, these exchange studies were not previously done in Hawaii because methods used to distinguish potential sources of basalt from source areas were generally expensive and complex and required the use of sophisticated equipment that is not always available for general use by archaeologists. As a result, the primary purpose of this paper is to show that it is not only possible to study archaeological material from Hawaii, it is also possible to do so by using relatively easy and inexpensive methods of optical mineralogy. In doing this study, this document describes adzes quarries that are located throughout the Hawaiian islands, the largest of which is the Mauna Kea Adze Quarry that is located on the island of Hawaii.
