Summary:
In spite of marked morphological, ecological, physiological, and chromosomal diversity, the Hawaiian silversword alliance of Argyroxiphium, Dubautia, and Wilkesia, is genetically cohesive. This is verified by the ease of production of artificial hybrids and by the high frequency of spontaneous hybridization among such life forms such as mat-forming subshrub, momocarpic rosette shrub, polycarpic shrub, cushion plant, tree, and vine. This paper presents the results of cytogenetic analyses of artificial hybrids produced to date and integrates this information with data that is available from natural hybrids. This was done in an attempt to assess the significance of chromosomal evolution in relation to other processes of differentiation that, together, have produced the spectacular example of adaptive radiation that constitutes the silversword alliance.
