Summary:
This document describes the leaf anatomy and ontogeny of four species of the genus Argyroxiphium, (that is commonly known as the "silversword") and the related monotypic genus, Wilkesia, both of which are narrowly-restricted Hawaiian endemics. Since there were differing opinions about these plants being classified with the tarweeds, it was the hope that anatomical information on these plants would help to clarify their systematic relationships. The remarkable specializations of habitat make these plants intriguing objects for anatomical study. Described are the differences of the leaves that are a part of these plants as they occur on various parts of the Hawaiian Islands.
