The article describes a route to the 13,784 foot summit of Mauna Kea from Kamuela, including a stop at the 9,500 foot elevation of Hale Pohaku, on the island of Hawaii. At that time Duke Kawai, a forest ranger with the Territorial Division of Fish and Game, was in charge of the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve.
