Summary:
Using GIS techniques, the spatial patterns of the 1954-1977 ohia dieback on the two mountain slopes of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea were investigated. The dieback patches on Mauna Kea slope were more numerous, smaller and more compact than those on Mauna Loa slope. While the dieback patches on Mauna Loa expanded quickly and formed large homogeneous mosaics, those on Mauna Kea remained discrete and stayed mostly within the scales of topographic variations. The overall dieback concentration was greater in the higher rainfall zones. The starting and concentration of dieback suggest that trees in wetter areas were more prone to die.
