B.A. in History Requirements

Group 1. General Education Foundation, Diversification, Structural, and Integrative Requirements in effect Fall 2018-Current

Students may choose to graduate under the General Education Foundation, Diversification, Structural and Integrative requirements and graduation requirements in force at the time they entered the UH System, when they entered UH Hilo, or when they graduate, provided there is no break in enrollment.

Students should meet with their academic advisor to ensure that they enroll in courses that will enable them to meet these requirements as well as requirements for the major and for graduation. Some courses may meet both General Education requirements and major requirements.

Specialization Requirement

Focus Area Specializations require 12 upper division credits is HIST courses, including three 300 or 400 level courses, and one 400-level course.

Students build or create their own focus area specialization from courses offered within the department and/or those offered in related disciplines. Students will plan their focus pathway in HIST 201 Pathways in History (1) with guidance from their History faculty. Specializations may be regional, national, area studies, thematic, interdisciplinary, or other; focus area specialization must be approved by History Department Chair.

Integrated Hawaiian History Specialization:1

The Integrated Hawaiian History Option at UH-Hilo provides a unique opportunity for our students to increase their capacity and potential in academia as well as fulfill a significant role in our community as they are encouraged to bring together the skills set forth within the disciplines of historical study, ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, and Hawaiian Studies/Hula. For this option GE and core requirements remain the same. The Integrated Hawaiian History Specialization requires 71 credits.

  2. A minimum GPA of 2.8 must be maintained in the 300- and 400-level History courses.
  3. At least 45 credits must be earned at the 300- or 400-level.
  4. To earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, students must fulfill the requirements for the major and meet all of the University’s other baccalaureate degree requirements. (Please see the Baccalaureate Degree Requirements in this Catalog.)
  5. Students wishing to make timely progress toward graduation are urged to pay careful attention to all degree requirements.
