QUEST Species Identification
QUEST applicants are required to pass an ID test in order to be eligible for acceptance into the course. The official QUEST organism lists and study materials, which include over 200 species of fish, invertebrates, and algae, can be found in the table below. The test will be graded on the correct identification and spelling of both the genus and species name. While the Hawaiian and common names of the organisms are important, they are not covered in these materials and do not count for this exam because the scientific names are the standard for marine surveys.
The Hilo and Mānoa campuses will offer ID courses and tests every semester. Students who are unable to take the exam at these campuses can contact the UH Hilo MOP Staff Coordinator to make arrangements for a remote examination.
