Current Freshmen

Welcome Home!

Who is my freshman advisor?

Prior to your first semester at UH Hilo, you were assigned to a freshman advisor, based on your declared major. In most cases, you will continue to work with this advisor throughout your first two semesters. Your advisor will communicate with you via your @hawaii.edu email, so be sure to check this regularly.

Freshman ʻEleu (i.e. Mandatory Freshman Advising)

Freshman ʻEleu is UH Hilo's mandatory advising campaign for first and second semester freshmen. If you entered as a freshmen, you are required to meet with your freshman advisor once in each of your first two semesters. This is your opportunity to check-in with your advisor, learn answers to your questions, be connected to relevant resources and programs, and to receive help with planning for your future. Your advisor will be in contact with you via your @hawaii.edu email prior to the start of Freshman ʻEleu with instructions on how to schedule your appointment.

Freshman ʻEleu Dates

Fall Semesters: September 15 - October 15
Spring Semesters: February 15 - March 15

First-Semester Freshmen ʻEleu

As a first-semester student, your Freshman ʻEleu appointment will focus on your transition to UH Hilo and college life in general. Your first semester can be an exciting, as well as challenging and confusing, experience. You may have questions about available resources, your academic major, and what to expect. Your freshman advisor is here to support you during this time.

Freshman ʻEleu is your opportunity to share your experiences during these first few weeks with your advisor. Your advisor can then provide guidance, connect you to resources, share opportunities and options to help you be successful and make the most of your time at UH Hilo.

  • Transition to college (e.g. expectations, homesickness, adjustment)
  • Academic Challenges (e.g. difficulties in courses)
  • Non-Academic Challenges (e.g. housing/roommate issues, financial difficulties)
  • Opportunities (e.g. Study Abroad / Exchange, student organizations)
  • Your Goals (e.g. career, academic, personal)

Second-Semester Freshmen ʻEleu

Your second-semester Freshman Eleu appointment will allow you to once again check-in with your academic advisor. At this point, you have completed a semester at UH Hilo. You may still be adjusting to college, living on your own, or have found a system to help you be successful. During your second semester, the discussion will introduce career exploration topics to help you identify possible career pathways and options.

Your responses will guide the conversation during your appointment, and will help us to better understand your experiences and how we can be of assistance to you during this first semester.

What happens after my first two semesters?

From your third semester onward, you will be working with your assigned faculty advisor. (How do I find my advisor?) Your faculty advisor is a faculty member within your major department. If you do not have a major declared (i.e. you are a General-Undeclared student), you will be assigned to a General-Undeclared advisor in our office to help you explore and decide upon a major.

While we will miss working with you, your faculty advisor has specialized knowledge, information, and connections that are key to being successful in your field. They are your best resource to discuss specialization within your major, internship opportunities, and career pathways. They are best able to help you to connect with other students and professionals in your field.
