Where You Are Now and What You're Doing

I am currently living on the Waimea side of the big island where I am working at the Canada France Hawaiʻi Telescope (CFHT) as a Remote Observer. In this position I am responsible for operating the telescope and taking data for other Astronomers.

Bio

I was born and raised in a small town in Ohio as the youngest of 4 children. My hometown was far enough from any city that we often had dark skies and when they were clear I found my fascination with the night sky grew as I did. When I took a astronomy class in high school I was hooked. I had always wanted to live in Hawaiʻi so I decided to combine my passion for astronomy with my passion for warmth and moved to the big island to attend UHH.

What Attracted You to UH Hilo Physics & Astronomy?

What first attracted me to UH Hilo Physics and Astronomy was its proximity to Maunakea; the best place in the world for astronomy. I knew that with the observatories in my backyard I would have more opportunities to work in them. I also preferred the smaller class sizes at UH Hilo so I could have more one on one conversations with my professors

Advice for Prospective/Current Students of UH Hilo Physics & Astronomy

Get a good base understanding in each class before moving on to the next one. Almost everyone I know who has graduated with a degree in astronomy, physics, or both has questioned weather or not they have what it takes. You do but you can't give up. Also, make connections by jumping on every opportunity you have to work with or near the observatories.
