About the UH Hilo Analytical Laboratory
The UH Hilo Analytical Laboratory was established in 2003 with a National Science Foundation EPSCoR grant. Our mission is to support research at the University of Hawaiʻi. Our primary focus is supporting ecological research and water quality studies. We provide analytical services for researchers throughout the University of Hawaii System as well as Federal and state agency research projects in the State of Hawaiʻi. We also provide analytical services for visiting researchers from other universities. We have established an Analytical Revolving Fund with the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaiʻi (RCUH). The laboratory is managed by
Our facility is located in the Marine Science Building at the University of Hawaiʻi Hilo.
Services
The services provided by the laboratory include:
Nutrient analyses of samples using a Lachat Quikchem 8500 Series II (Lachat Instruments, Hach Co.)
Total organic carbon and total nitrogen analysis of water samples by high-temperature combustion using a TOC/TN Analyzer (Shimadzu TOC-V, TNM-1)
Particulate carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur analyses of soils, sediments, plant materials, plankton, and filters using high temperature combustion interfaced to an IRMS (Costech Elemental Analyzer)
Hydrogen and oxygen isotope ratio analysis in plant materials, soils, sediments, and animal tissue using a Thermo TC/EA (Thermo Electron) interfaced to an IRMS
Elemental analysis of major and minor elements in water, plant materials, soils, sediments, and animal tissue using an ICP-OES Spectrometer (Thermo iCAP 7400 DUO)
Hydrogen and oxygen isotope ratio analysis in water, oxygen and carbon isotopes of carbonates, carbon and nitrogen isotopes in air using a Thermo GasBench II (Thermo Electron) interfaced to an IRMS
Stable isotopic analyses of inorganic carbon in water samples using an Aurora 1030W (OI Analytical ) interfaced to an IRMS
Stable isotopic analyses of hydrogen, oxygen, and carbonates for soils, plant materials, plankton, filters, animal tissue, water and gas samples using an Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (Thermo Delta V Advantage IRMS)
We now accept all major credit cards
There is a 3% fee on invoices over $1000.
