Mauna Loa Fountains, Hawaii
Mauna Loa Volcano, Hawaii. In the 1984 eruption a mile-long fissure opened along the northeast rift. The lava fountains in this photo are about 50 to 100 feet high. The geologists are standing on a black older flow. The silver gray flow near the fountains is molten rock -- the fallback from the fountains.
