Guagua Pichincha, Ecuador

photo of Guagua Pichincha, Ecuador

Guagua Pichincha Volcano in Ecuador erupted a huge mushroom cloud of ash on the morning of October 7, 1999, and a dusting of ash fell on the capital city of Quito. Forty centimeters of ash fell on Quito during a major eruption in 1660. Only small eruptions have occurred this century prior to this latest activity. The proximity of Guagua Pichincha to Quito makes it a potentially very dangerous volcano.
