2002 National Drawing Exhibition

Campus Center Gallery, University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, Hilo, Hawaiʻi, February 4, 2002-April 12, 2002

The Art Department at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo is pleased to announce the opening of the 2002 National Drawing Exhibition. The show is the first national juried exhibition focused on graduate and undergraduate drawing to be held in the State of Hawaiʻi. Thirty four professional and degree granting institutions specializing in fine art participated in the 2002 National Drawing Exhibition. Universities and schools from across the country, sent a group of nearly 300 drawings to the exhibition for juried review. The works were juried by Professor Leon N. Hicks, Professor Emeritus of Art Webster Unversity, St. Louis, MO during his recent residency at the Univeristy of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Art Department in early January 2002.

The show will include works from the following institutions: Howard University, Washington, D.C; Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, GA; University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo and University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa; Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville; Ball State University in Muncie and Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN; Drake University in Des Moines and the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA; Fort Hays State University, Fort Hays and the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS; Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA; Kendall College of Art and Design, Grand Rapids and Wayne State University, Detroit, MI; Fontbonne College, and Webster University, St. Louis, MO; University of Las Vegas, NV; New Mexico State University, Las Cruces; Appalachian State University in Boone, Guilford College in Greensboro, and the University of North Carolina at Chaple Hill, NC; Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA; University of Texas - Permian Basin in Odessa and the University of Texas - San Antonio, TX; and Utah State University, Logan, UT.

The show is unique in that all of the drawings submitted for review were nominated by their institution or department for the exhibition. The exhibition, focused on drawing as a direct means of visual expression, will also provide an overview of contemporary approaches to the medium. The exhibition provides the opportunity for students involved in the visual arts at UH Hilo to see themselves in relation to their national contemporary peer group.

The 2002 National Drawing Exhibition, organized by the University of Hawaiʻi of Hilo Art Department is made possible with funding support from the UH Hilo/Haw CC Student Activities Council. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 - 4:30, and is located on the third floor of the Campus Center.

For additional information and disability access please contact Professor Michael Marshall in the Art Department at 974-7524.
