Counselors Corner

The Student Health & Wellness Programs Clinical Corner is developed by UH Hilo Counselors. This is intended for informational purposes only and not a replacement for therapy. If you are seeking counseling or have questions, please make an appointment with a counselor (uhhcouns@hawaii.edu) or call (808) 932-7465.

Beginner's Mind

How often have you let past experiences cloud or disrupt your present experiences? Like a child experiencing something for the first time, a beginner's mind is about dropping our expectations and preconceived notions, seeing things with an open mind and curiosity. This allows us to stay in the present and experience the moment as it is. Practicing a beginner's mind doesn't mean that we don't learn from the past experience. It means that we don't let past experiences dictate present experiences. How can you apply this to your life today?
