- Surfs were named in ancient Hawaii Finney (pp. 26–31) lists and locates 86 sites, most of which were named. Pukui, Elbert, and Mookini 1974 (especially p. 243) list many more, including modern names such as Avalanche, Banzai Pipeline, Flies, Incinerators, Populars, Publics, Slaughterhouse, and Turtle. More than 1,700 surfing sites have been identified.
