A prefix similar in meaning to the causative/simulative hoʻo-.

• Related:
  • Before short vowels and glottal stop the form is usually hā-, as hāinu, to give to drink, and hāʻawe, to carry.
  • Before consonants, both haʻa- and hā- occur, as haʻalele and hākuʻi.
  • Before glottal stop plus a long vowel, ha- occurs, as haʻāpuka.
  • For a few bases, derivatives with both haʻa- and hoʻo occur, as haʻakoʻo and hoʻokoʻo, which have the same meanings; with a few bases, meanings differ, as haʻalele (described with the h's) and hoʻolele (under lele).
  • A few bases with haʻa- may form another derivative with hoʻo-, as inu, hāinu, and hoʻohāinu; heo, haʻaheo, hoʻohaʻaheo.
  • Before colors the meaning is “-ish, somewhat,” as hākea, haʻakea, hāʻeleʻele, hāuliuli.
