Beach, Kehena, Hawaiʻi. Black sand beach at the base of Kehena's low sea cliffs that was created by the lava flow at the east end of the beach during the eruption of 1955. In 1979 the beach dropped nearly three feet after a severe earthquake shook the Puna District. Literally, place where refuse is thrown and burned.
