Articulation equivalencies for General Education for transfer students from American Samoa Community College to the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo.
The attached articulation table was compiled from existing tables in use at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo for transfer course from American Samoa Community College and for transfer equivalences for General Education requirements at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. This clarification does not override any of the existing agreements between the two institutions, it only attempts to simplify and explain how to apply transfer courses to the current General Education requirements.
Any student that completes a two-year Associate of Arts degree at American Samoa Community College, or other accredited Liberal Arts College is exempt from the Core (Basic and Area) requirements at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. This is not the case with an Associate of Science degree, as it is usually not liberal arts based. In the case of an Associate of Science degree, or a student that transfers without an AA degree, the transfer will be calculated course by course using current UH Hilo transfer tables updated yearly by the UH Hilo Admissions Office, using the most recently published catalog.
The 2014-15 UH Hilo catalog states:
“Students transferring into UH Hilo with a conferred Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree or a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from an institution accredited by a U.S. regional accreditation agency will be exempted from the General Education Core (Basic and Area) requirements, unless specific course requirements are needed for a given major or specialty.”
The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Core General Education requirements are published in the current 2014-15 catalog as follows:
Core:
- Basic Requirements
- Composition (3 cr)
- Language Arts (3 cr)
- Quantitative Reasoning (6 cr)
- World Cultures (6 cr)
- Area Requirements
- Humanities (6 cr in two different disciplines)
- Social Sciences (6 cr in two different disciplines)
- Natural Sciences (7 cr, including two lecture courses in different disciplines and one laboratory course associated with one of these)
The General Education requirements are specific about how many credit hours must be taken to fulfill each Basic and Area requirements. Area requirements are further specified to be two courses in two different areas. It is important to note, therefore, that if a four-credit course transfers to UH Hilo as a four-credit course that applies to the Humanities Area or Social Sciences Area requirement, only three credits of that course will apply to GE and the remaining credit hour will count as elective credits toward the total credit hour graduation requirement.
It is also important to note that only the Basic and Core requirements are exempt by the Associate of Arts degree. The following Integrative Requirements:
- Writing Intensive (3 courses, at least one at the upper-division level)
- Hawaiʻi Pan-Pacific (3 cr)
- Global and Community Citizenship (3 cr)
are also published in the UH Hilo catalog under General Education and are not exempted by an AA degree. These requirements must be covered by matching course-by-course equivalencies when transferring, or completed as part of the students’ course of study at UH Hilo.
