Assistant Professor (Marine Science/Marine Biology) (#73289) Position Description

UH Hilo, College of Natural & Health Sciences, tenure-track, full-time, general funds, nine-month appointment to begin approximately August 2023, pending position clearance and availability of funding.

Duties

Teach undergraduate and MS level courses on campus and field labs at the shoreline, including, but not limited to: introductory Marine Biology lecture and laboratory, Marine Ecology and Evolution, Coastal Methods and Analysis lecture and laboratory, and undergraduate lecture and lab courses in the applicant’s specialty (9 credits/semester with potential for buyouts); advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students; conduct research, preferably in nearshore waters and coral reefs, and publish results; participate in departmental, community, and university service; possibly participate in summer courses for additional compensation.

Minimum Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Marine Biology or closely related discipline with experience in the area of marine biology at the time of appointment; peer-reviewed publication record; university teaching experience; and experience mentoring student research.

Desirable Qualifications

Post-doctoral experience; coastal waters and coral reef research experience; conducts research that integrates benthic ecology and biology; certified scientific SCUBA diver through an accredited organization such as AAUS; demonstrated ability to acquire external research funding; record of teaching as primary instructor at the university level in discipline; the ability and a plan to develop 1) marine biology research, 2) research in Hawai‘i and the insular Pacific region, 3) collaboration with department faculty on integrated research, and 4) incorporating undergraduates in research.

Pay Range

Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
