Instructor (Physics & Astronomy) (#86382) Position Description

UH Hilo, College of Natural & Health Sciences, position number 86382, non-tenure track, general funds, full-time, 9-month, renewable-type appointment dependent on performance and/or funding. Appointment to begin approximately January 2019, pending position clearance and availability of funding.
Teach undergraduate lecture courses in physics and astronomy as needed; work closely with all faculty members in coordinating and teaching physics laboratory courses; teach astronomy lab courses involving the use of astronomical telescopes; participate actively in department programs and initiatives; advise and counsel students.
Masters (or equivalent) in physics, astronomy, or related
area from an accredited university; one year of experience teaching of physics or
astronomy as the lead instructor, at the undergraduate level.
Three years of experience teaching physics and astronomy at the undergraduate level; demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate physics labs or lectures; experience with teaching and learning strategies focused on active participation of
students; experience with telescopes and astronomical instruments in order to support students with astronomical observations on Maunakea (including small, portable telescopes); experience with UNIX and Windowsbased operating systems and modern programming language(s); instructional interests which complement existing department course offerings and activities; ability to enthusiastically attract students to the field of physics or astronomy including those students who traditionally have been underrepresented in the STEM fields; successful experience working with a diverse faculty and student body; experience and/or strong commitment working in multicultural and diverse settings and with Native Hawaiian and/or other Indigenous populations.
