UH Hilo, College of Agriculture, Forestry & Natural Resource Management/Pacific Aquaculture Coastal Resource Center (PACRC), full-time, general funds, to begin approximately October 2024, pending position clearance and availability of funding.
Duties
Works with Pacific Aquaculture & Coastal Resources Center (PACRC) staff to develop and implement aquaculture and environmental research and education programs to a wide variety of audiences, mainly in Hawaii but also potentially in the Pacific. Responsible for the daily husbandry with the exception of specialized research, for all PACRC aquatic organisms, including monitoring water quality, organism health, feeds and feeding and facilities. Works with the following: freshwater fish, aquaponics, marine fish, invertebrates, seaweed, live feeds and micro algae culture. Assists PACRC staff and UH researchers in the design, building and maintaining of aquatic organism systems. Troubleshoots problems, implements standard operating procedures, and contacts appropriate people for assistance when system failures occur. Be able to follow instructions over the phone and in equipment manuals to conduct basic repairs. Assists with laboratory analysis and laboratory courses. Assists with planning, coordinating, and participating in community engagement, outreach and extension activities. Trains new personnel, students, student assistants, and volunteers on the safe operation and maintenance of tools, machinery equipment, and facilities common to aquaculture operations. Examples: tractors, forklifts, pumps, aerators, pumping tools, basic electrical wiring, saws, mowers, etc. Facilitates, in conjunction with faculty, course and student aquaculture projects, including enterprise production and applied research. Manages and supervises all areas of the PACRC, including and not limited to the building, wet laboratory, tanks, and storage areas other than those designated to specific personnel; maintains a clean and safe environment in all areas. Constructs facilities or coordinates construction projects; updates PACRC maps to include changes, including the addition of underground utilities. Improves the PACRC safety plan. Ensures that staff and volunteers are aware of safety policies and plans. Enforces health and safety regulations. Ensures that the PACRC complies with government regulations. Responsible for continuous animal care systems such as air and water support that require IACUC approval. Must be able to pass required training for IACUC compliance. Maintain research compliance records, and assist with inspections. Manages PACRC facilities budget in coordination with administrative directives: controls expenditure of funds and maintains accurate and current financial records. Purchases supplies and maintains an appropriate level of inventory; uses approved processes and systems to purchase high cost items. Maintains records of PACRC operations, completes necessary reports, and provides updates as needed or requested to the administration and the faculty. Recommends improvements and changes to the program and facilities, replacement of or changes in equipment, and use of facilities, in consultation with the faculty and administration. Manages and supervises non-RCUH PACRC support personnel and student employees: train, schedules, guides, and evaluates personnel; hires, retains, terminates student employees per applicable SECE and RCUH procedures; processes student time cards. Conducts inventory and maintains records for vehicles, equipment, tools, and rolling stock; assures that all are well maintained, repaired, and safe for use. Facilitates the material needs of all labs on the PACRC and participates in labs at PACRC as requested. Works with Auxiliary Services to obtain services outside the expertise of PACRC personnel. Collaborates with UH Hilo faculty, administration, Hawaii Community College and other UH Hilo personnel to provide services and information to ensure the smooth operation of the PACRC. Monitors security on PACRC facilities. Assists the PACRC in interaction with student organizations associated with UHH. Conducts and/or coordinates tours of facilities, assists visitors to the PACRC; schedules use of PACRC facilities, following UH Hilo policy. Assists PACRC users with management of UH Hilo aquatic organisms including all management and treatment needs. Manages the maintenance of all PACRC facilities and needs such as fences, gates, and aquaculture structures. Assists the appropriate faculty the fair sale of all surplus PACRC aquatic organism production. Receives requests and allocates space for PACRC facilities in coordination with administration. Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Aquaculture, Fisheries or related fields and 2 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for aquaculture production including system development and maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated. Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in production aquaculture, including system design and construction, identification of culture organisms, breeding culture organisms, nutrition and feeding, nursery and grow-out procedures, health management, harvest and handling, and wastewater management demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology. Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with aquaculture and aquatic organism care and water use and management. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the area of aquaculture and aquatic organism care and water use and management. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software. Familiar with the use of spreadsheets in data entry and planning; able to prepare reports and presentations using MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; must be proficient with email. For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Possess a current driver's license and ability to drive vehicles with manual shift. Able to operate (or willing to learn to operate) basic aquaculture lab and field equipment. Able to perform (or willing to learn) standard servicing and repairs of tools, machinery, and equipment common to aquaculture operations. Able to use hand and power tools for simple construction and repair (particularly plumbing tools). Basic mechanical and construction skills and some knowledge of electrical systems in order to design, build and maintain aquaculture system. Demonstrated ability to function in a multi-cultural setting
Desirable Qualifications
M.S. degree in aquaculture, fisheries, marine science, conservation biology, environmental studies, or a related field. Experience supervising and working with professional level employees. Basic machining and welding skills. Practical experience in non-formal aquaculture education. Familiarity with RCUH and UH administrative and fiscal policies and procedures. Scientific dive certified or willing and able to undergo training and certification. Demonstrated ability to culture larval and adult shellfish, seaweed, and fin fish (freshwater and marine). Demonstrated ability to culture micro algae and live feeds such as rotifers and cope pods.
Pay Range
PBB, minimum $4,490/month
