Student Services Specialist (Retention Specialist), PBB (#97293T) Position Description

UH Hilo, Student Affairs, full-time, temporary, not to exceed June 30, 2025, to begin approximately July 2024, pending position clearance and availability of funding.
Duties
Under the general supervision of the Director of the UH Hilo Advising Center provides support to the program and overall campus through outreach and programming to impact undergraduate student success at UH Hilo. Student Success Outreach: Develops, coordinates, and conducts current student outreach that supports academic success and persistence. Organize and execute a multi-outlet communication plan to continuing students, that includes email, phone calls, Zoom, in-person events, classroom visits, and social media. Contact and provide general student success advising to continuing students and discuss academic progress to degree, including academic referral, academic action, and non-registration for following term and make necessary referrals to campus offices. Assist in verifying and making advisor assignments in Banner for colleges and divisions. Oversee and maintain social media accounts for student support and outreach, including digital media content creation. Program Planning and Management: Under the general supervision of the Director of the UH Hilo Advising Center, performs administrative tasks as they pertain to daily operations, including providing support to students and staff. Coordinate and assist in the creation of a multi-modal workshops series on student success topics including, but not limited to time management, academic distress, and academic regulations and deadlines, and in collaboration with campus student success units and faculty. Participate in collection of data and feedback of programming and services provided to students. Participates in professional development, as appropriate to scope of position. Attends workshops and other in-service training as needed or required. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in any field and 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for student support services in a university or college; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills, and abilities indicated. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in the area of student success, engagement, and retention as demonstrated by broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles, and methodologies. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and theories and systems associated with higher education student success and engagement. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems that may commonly contribute to student attrition in an effective, innovative and timely manner. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members, and individuals. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software, and applications within the Google and Microsoft Office suites, digital design software, and Zoom. Demonstrated ability to apply and adapt cultural competency skills to respond to needs of a diverse student population. Demonstrated skill in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with faculty, staff, and most importantly, students. If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrative ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
Desirable Qualifications
Possession of a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology or Communication. Minimum 4 years of professional experience in student affairs at post-secondary educational institution. Functional knowledge of University organizational structure and functions, policies and procedures, and academic programs. Functional knowledge of FERPA. Prior experience in program and workshop development. Prior experience using STAR Balance. Prior experience using Banner. Outstanding and compassionate verbal and written communication skills. Experience with social media marketing and digital media design.
Pay Range
PBB minimum $5,250/month
