UH Hilo, College of Continuing Education and Community Service, non-tenure track, special funds, full-time, 11-month position to begin approximately August 2013, pending position clearance and availability of funds.


The English Language Institute (ELI) Director reports to the Dean of the College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS) and is responsible for developing, marketing, implementing, managing, and evaluating the ESL (English as a Second Language) program for the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. The director supervises all aspects of the ELI: manages the ELI budget with the assistance of CCECS staff; coordinates course schedules; oversees the hiring, supervision and evaluation of faculty teaching; recruits and supervises student tutors and student assistants; plans and supervises student placement testing, registration and orientation; advises students on course planning and coordinates placement into ESL courses; develops and evaluates curriculum and curriculum materials; supports instructor professional development; develops and implements outreach and short-term ESL programs; markets and recruits students for the ELI program; implement ELI strategic planning goals; serves as the primary contact between UH Hilo and the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA) while maintaining accreditation; and works with UH Hilo faculty, Admissions, Records and Student Services to provide English-language services to degree-seeking and other international students. The director is responsible for program review as specified in the UH Hilo Program Review guidelines, and will lead the ELI in such program initiatives as the maintenance of accreditation. The director may be required to teach select courses. The director will work in multiple work settings and maintain a variable work schedule including nights, weekends and/or holiday hours.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Linguistics or English with a TESOL emphasis. Minimum of one year experience in ESL curriculum development and program management. A minimum of one year successful, recent experience teaching academic ESL in a post-secondary institution. Minimum of one year in ESL program administrative duties. Demonstrated ability to coordinate outreach and short-term programs. Knowledge and understanding of current theory and methodology in ESL. Proficiency of spoken and written English commensurate with his or her role as a language model. Understanding of and respect for a diversity of students and cultural backgrounds. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with international students and students for whom English is not a native language.

Desirable Qualifications

Minimum of five years experience in ESL curriculum development and program management. A minimum of five years successful, recent experience teaching academic ESL in a post-secondary institution. Minimum of three years in ESL program administrative duties. Knowledge of student information database (e.g., Banner) and strong computer and administrative skills. Knowledge of administrative and fiscal processes and procedures in a higher education setting. Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff across campus. Demonstrated ability to communicate with a high level of effectiveness in writing and speech, including public presentations. Experience developing professional development activities for faculty. Experience presenting/promoting marketing materials. Experience incorporating technological innovation in management theory.

Pay Range

Commensurate with education and experience
