UH Hilo, position located on the Manoa campus on Oahu, Na Pua No‘eau, full time, temporary, federal funds, pending position clearance, renewal subject to funding availability, to begin approximately March 2013.


The position reports to the Executive Director of Na Pua No‘eau and is responsible to coordinate the Health Careers Pathway Project funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Responsible for the day to day administration and coordination of the Project. The position will assure that the activities and agreements with the Project partners are in place and being delivered collaboratively and effectively. Plans and coordinates in collaboration with UH Professional Health Schools and Na Pua No‘eau a series of Statewide events conducted through the UH campuses to Hawaiian students in K-12 and their families. Brings together a team of faculty and students from the professional schools to provide a hands-on activity to students in K-12 and 6-12 demonstrating the skills, attitudes and abilities needed to become a health professional. Conducts a series of informational sessions about the Project on different islands to students and communities statewide. Coordinates with UHM and UH Hilo Native Hawaiian student support services and STEM programs the development and implementation of student support activities for participating college students. Coordinates with UH Professional Health Schools: the design of internships and community service; the development of criteria and selection of students to receive internships/community service; and distribution of stipends. Works with collaborating partners in the collecting of information that would be part of performance measures and reports required for the grant. Meets initially with Na Pua No‘eau Executive Director and Director of Operations to learn the coordination points with Na Pua No‘eau Program Coordinators at each site for K-12 programming. Develops preliminary schedule for first year for selecting and coordinating college scholars program. Develops and provides written quarterly performance reports to Executive Director and Director of Operations. Works with team of students and faculty from Health professional schools/departments in scheduling, preparing and designing curriculum and activities for events scheduled on Oahu, Kauai, Maui, Lanai, Molokai. Provides training on “best practices” and Na Pua No‘eau “core elements” to participating faculty and students. Provides information about the nature and scope of the project and the outcomes expected with respect to health professional careers during informational sessions. Works with each program student in developing an academic support, cultural strengthening and community service plan as part of the program. Works with the partnering support services to assign student to activity specific to student plan. Works with selected students to develop an internship/community service in coordination with Professional department and school. Allocates and disperses stipends to students. Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Education, health sciences, social sciences, natural sciences, business administration, or Hawaiian education and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for teaching, counseling, or program coordination; or equivalent education/training or experience. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the field of education, teaching, counseling, or program coordination as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with education, teaching, counseling, or program coordination. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software. For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience working with University of Hawaiʻi Health Professional Schools and Departments. Demonstrated ability to coordinate support service programs at the University of Hawaiʻi. Experience working with native Hawaiian students. Experience working with the native Hawaiian community. Experience working with higher education programs and departments.

Pay Range

PBB, minimum $3727/month
