UH Hilo, Na Pua No‘eau, 50% time, temporary, federal funds, pending position clearance, renewal subject to funding availability, to begin approximately March 2013.


The position reports to the Ke Ola Mau Project Coordinator. The position is responsible for the Ke Ola Mau Project activities and students at the UH Hilo campus. Plans and coordinates a series of Hawaiʻi Island based events conducted through the UH Hilo campus to Hawaiian students in K-12 and their families. Brings together a team of faculty and students from College of Pharmacy, Nursing Department to provide a hands-on activity to students in K-12 and 6-12 demonstrating the skills, attitudes and abilities needed to become a health professional. Coordinates student support activities for participating college students. Designs and coordinates the internships and community service projects for the program students. Develops criteria and selects students to receive internships/community service. Decides on the level and amount of stipends to be distributed based on number of student applicants and level of service internships providing. Evaluates the performance of the students and include in reports for U.S. Department of Education. Works with team of students and faculty from Health professional schools/departments in scheduling, preparing and designing curriculum and activities for events scheduled on Hawaiʻi Island. Provides training on “best practices” and Na Pua No‘eau “core elements” to participating faculty and students. Conducts a series of informational sessions about the Project on Hawaiʻi Island to students and communities. Provides information about the nature and scope of the project and the outcomes expected with respect to health professional careers. Works with each program student in developing an academic support, cultural strengthening and community service plan as part of the program. Works with the partnering support services to assign student to activity specific to student plan. Works with selected students to develop an internship/community service in coordination with Professional department and school, Na Pua No‘eau K-12 programs, and community agencies. Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a baccalaureate degree in education, health sciences, social sciences, natural sciences, business administration, or Hawaiian education and 2 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for teaching, counseling, or program coordination; or equivalent education/training or experience. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the field of education as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with education. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software. For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated. Experience working with Hawaiian students. Experience providing support services to students. Experience working with health professionals in an educational setting.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience working with the Hawaiian community.

Pay Range

PBB, minimum $1863.50/month
