UH at Hilo, College of Arts & Sciences, Physics and Astronomy Department, permanent, full-time, general funds, to begin approximately February, 2013, pending position clearance and funding.


Procurement of departmental supplies and equipment: equipment searches, cost reasonableness analysis and sole source reports), maintenance of supply inventories. Maintenance of department budget and preparation of budget reports. Supervision of departmental vehicles: reservations, fueling, service and inspection, roadside assistance. Assistance with operation and maintenance of department laboratories and its observatory on Mauna Kea. Supervision of the department’s machine shop including maintenance of supplies and tool inventories. Assistance with computer and equipment setup, software installation and testing, and connectivity to Campus network. Work beyond normal work hours, including mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays as directed. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a baccalaureate degree in astronomy, physics, engineering, computer science or related science discipline and 2 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for operation and/or maintenance of scientific instruments, or equivalent education/training or experience. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the use of scientific instruments and facilities in the fields of applied physics, observational astronomy, geology or related areas as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable Federal and State laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with instructional programs. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and their resolution in an effective, innovative and timely manner. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally, and by preparation of reports and other materials. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software. For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects and manage employee relations. Experience with operation and/or maintenance of scientific instruments. Ability to travel to and from the University observatory site and to perform needed work there, including heavy lifting, high ladder and scaffolding work and scientific equipment operation at an elevation of 14,000 feet above sea level. Proficiency with computers operating Windows, Mac or Unix systems. Possess a valid driver’s license. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience with design and operation of astronomical instruments and telescopes and with astronomical observations. Proficiency in programming with scientific and/or process control programming languages. Machine shop experience. Experience with instructional science laboratories at the university level.

Pay Range

PBB, $3,541/month minimum
