Request to Form an Ad Hoc Committee to Develop Guidelines/Criteria for Early Promotion and Tenure
Whereas, UH Hilo faculty members, per contract, have the right to apply for early promotion and tenure.
Whereas, there are no faculty-developed guidelines/criteria for early promotion and tenure to direct their efforts.
Whereas, many faculty members have expressed concerns about evaluating dossiers of fellow faculty members going up for early promotion and/or tenure.
Whereas, many DPC and TPRC members have expressed concerns about evaluating dossiers of fellow faculty members going up for early promotion and/or tenure.
Whereas, the Interim VCAA, Ken Hon has created a webpage dedicated to addressing this issue at the following URL:https://hilo.hawaii.edu/uhh/vcaa/personnelpoliciesandprocedures/early-promotion-tenure.php. This webpage includes a template file (in memo form) to use to apply for early promotion and/or tenure). It includes a change in procedure that has not been reviewed or discussed with faculty. That change is the submission of the application portion of the dossier, rather than a CV, for the Department Chair, Division Chair, Dean, and the Vice Chancellor to review prior to forwarding to the Chancellor for final review and approval.
Therefore, it is requested that the UH Hilo Faculty Congress form an Ad Hoc Committee to develop guidelines/criteria for fellow faculty members who intend to apply for early promotion and tenure.
