Outstanding Advisor/Mentor Award Description
Recognizes a faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding academic advising and/or mentoring of students.
Eligibility
- Any full-time UH Hilo faculty (including instructors).
- Nominees who have retired within the academic year nominated will be considered.
Criteria
Criteria for nomination include evidence of effective advising and/or mentoring qualities and practices that distinquish the nominee as an outstanding academic advisor and/or mentor. Such evidence may include, but is not limited to:
- Mastery of insitutional regulations, policies and procedures, especially as they relate to academic, and/or graduation requirements.
- Creating, extending, or expanding programs or services that enhance advising or mentoring.
- Caring attitude toward advisees.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Helping students clarify career/life goals as well as educational goals.
- Monitoring of student progress toward academic and career goals.
- Availability to advisees.
- Use of relevant information sources.
- Evidence of student success.
- Perception by colleagues and students of nominee's advising and/or mentoring skills.
- Appropriate referral activity.
Procedure
Faculty, staff, and/or students may nominate candidates for the award.
- A completed nomination form.
- A statement summarizing the extent to which the nominee meets award criteria.
- A letter of support from at least one student who has been advised and/or mentored by the nominee.
- Optional materials may include letters of support and other pertinent information provided by the nominee or nominator(s).
