Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Students

At UH Hilo, the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs/Dean of Students (AVCSA/DOS) Office administers the Code of Conduct and Care Team processes to ensure students rights and responsibilities are being upheld within an ethic of care to provide students appropriate resources, support and to ensure the academic environment is conducive to student learning. This includes oversight of student conduct adjudication; student crisis response and intervention at both the individual and community levels; student advocacy and problem-resolution in consultation with administrator, faculty, staff and other UH System campus personnel; compliance with relevant University policies, state guidelines and federal regulations governing student life and student affairs, including but not limited to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy & Campus Crime Statistics Act, the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act, and the Americans With Disabilities Act.

At UH Hilo, the community takes pride in its academic mission where students' lives are transformed in a diverse academic and student-centered culture designed to promote a safe and respectful learning environment. Because of this, student rights and responsibilities are taken seriously and students are expected to uphold and maintain the Code of Student Conduct, which identifies behavioral expectations for all UH Hilo students. All UH Hilo students are expected to know the Student Code of Conduct, understand their rights and responsibilities within the UH Hilo community, and to report violations of the Code through submitting an incident report or notifying Campus Security, Housing and Residence Life, or the AVCSA/DOS Office. Incidents reported through this process are triaged to appropriately investigate violations of the Code of Student Conduct and in cases where the Code has been violated, to adjudicate those cases accordingly through the judicial processes established and outlined within the Code of Conduct. In this this process, students will be notified, as appropriate to participate, as outlined in the Code of Conduct, and are expected to comply with the directives set forth in the Code and through the Dean of Students Office inquiries. Failure to do so, can result in further Code violations.

The AVCSA/DOS also provides administrative support and institutional leadership for several key areas of University operations which includes Student Affairs divisional professional development, oversight of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives (which includes oversight of the Women's Resource Center and the LGBTQ+ Center), and communications around campus and community resources, including UH Hilo Happenings for students. Additionally, the AVCSA/DOS contributes to the development, implementation and assessment of programs, practices, policies, activities, and initiatives designed to improve student success and contribute to student persistence, retention, and graduation as well as for considerations around campus safety and risk management around crisis management in coordination with other respective efforts from administrative offices.

Report an Incident

The AVCSA/DOS Office also maintains all records related to these matters and these disciplinary records are protected by a federal policy law called the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Students may request copies of their files and/or may give permission to have their files viewed by others (including third parties), by completing and submitting a Release of Information Form to the AVCSA/DOS Office via email/fax.
