UH Hilo Suicide Prevention Program
In Spring 2019, the UH Hilo Suicide Prevention Program conducted a student wellbeing survey and 7 focus groups. Find out more by reading a short summary and checking out the results.
To begin to address the needs identified in the survey and focus groups:
- Heartmath biofeedback stations were placed around campus
- Mindfulness classes are being offered
- Walk-in Wednesdays have been initiated at Counseling Services
- A stigma-reduction and help-seeking campaign logo and slogan design contest will involve students in the development of campus appropriate materials
- Student, faculty and staff training materials are being reviewed with student participation
- Art, music, safety, and basic needs are being considered in prevention education and awareness events and efforts
The UH Hilo Suicide Prevention Program includes prevention programming, events, and training, such as QPR Gatekeeper Training.

QPR Gatekeeper Training
Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR), is an evidence-based suicide prevention program that teaches people how to become suicide prevention gatekeepers. Gatekeepers know the risk factors and warning signs of suicide and how to ask if a person is thinking of suicide. They also are able to persuade the person to get help, and refer him or her to appropriate resources.
Students will be trained to recognize the signs of suicide, Question & determine intent, persuade person to accept help, and refer person to resources.
