UH Hilo Strategic Planning

Meeting Notes - September 21, 2022

Relationships Committee Meeting: Wednesday, September 21 at 2:00pm

Present: Justina Mattos, Julie Mowrer, David Kurohara, and Kathleen Baumgardner

Meeting purpose: Online recognition system review

Wailau update

The idea: The purpose of Wailau is to build connections across campus and with the wider community that go deeper than the roles we hold while honoring our complex, fragile and brave selves. In keeping with the meaning of Wailau, we will showcase five storytellers at each event - a UH faculty member, staff member, student, alum and a community member.

We discussed the possible institutionalization of Wailau. The plan is to continue one episode per semester, two each academic year. Course release will be critical for Justina. The event will be staged live with a captioned video after the premiere with no pre-taped stories. The location will remain at Campus Center until the event captures an audience that is larger than the venue. Any funding should be provided to CAS rather than the Performing Arts Center, because the effort has a broader scope and Performing Arts is quite small. The budget will be revised to reflect the new live event.

Wailau is set for 4:00pm on Friday, November 18, 2022, Campus Center 301. We currently have four selected storytellers but are missing a community member storyteller. We also have our student hosts and a topic expert in place, with bios and photos already posted on the web. Storyteller bios are yet to come.

Wailau action items:

  • Kathleen will draft a Wailau funding proposal.
  • Kathleen will revise the budget and include it in the proposal.

Online Recognition System

7.1.1. Strategy 7: Nurture and strengthen campus relationships and campus culture. Action 1: Increase opportunities to express gratitude and celebrate success in large and small ways across campus. Deliverable 1: Communicated the work of campus groups/committees recognizing that the work was meaningful and acknowledging the impact or efforts that came to fruition.

We discussed the wording of the text associated with each quality the user may select to honor a recipient. We edited each brief message. The sender is able to edit the pre populated text, giving them either a starting or ending point.

We also discussed the possibility of generating a card with a print option. We want to go with “mahalo” rather than “kākoʻo.”

Kathleen noted that Brennan has made the date field optional. This unties the mahalo from an act that occurred on one day and could be linked to continued efforts.

Online recognition system action items:

  • Kathleen will touch base with Brennan to provide all the edits and ask a few questions based on the discussion.

Additional Discussion

Community Resource Fair Poster

The Center of Community Engagement will be hosting a Community Partner Fair on September 27 to connect students, faculty, and staff with opportunities for engagement with local organizations. 14 organizations will be participating. This is a pilot and includes volunteer opportunities as well as jobs. Lunch will be provided for the organizations.

At this point our time had expired, and we closed the discussion.
