1. Who is eligible to apply?

Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, African Americans, Hispanics (includes Filipinos), Alaskan / Native Americans, Students with documented disability, Pell Grant eligible. Find out more about eligibility.

2. Do I need to be a specific major to do biomedical / behavioral research in SHARP?

NO. If you’re motivated, wish to seek answers to health-related questions, open to pursuing a PhD in biomedical / biobehavioral research, then SHARP may be a good fit. Find out more about majors.

3. How will participation in SHARP benefit me as a UH Hilo student?

We offer a range of services including paid research internships mentored by a SHARP faculty, enroll in two specialized courses, professional development forums and lectures, engage in graduate school preparation & support, travel to participate in national research conferences, and more benefits.

4. My GPA is below the 3.0. Should I bother to apply?

While we require a 3.0 GPA we do understand that GPA alone doesn’t tell the full story of a student’s motivation, heart, capacity, and interest. So, we hope you apply. Find out more about eligibility.

5. What are some examples of biomedical / biobehavioural topics for SHARP students?

Our research topics are based on on-going or future research conducted by our SHARP faculty and mentors.

6. How do I apply?

Basically, you first need to determine if you qualify, select your top 3 choices of research projects, prepare your short essays, fill out the Online SHARP Student Application form, email your resume to Dr. Lynn Morrison (lmorriso@hawaii.edu), the SHARP Director and Lenard Allen (lenarda@hawaii.edu) SHARP Project Manager.
