We are looking for students who may have one or more of these characteristics or experiences:

  • Motivated to help your community in health-related & biomedical research
  • Had a profound life-changing, health-related experience that has impacted your career interest
  • Highly encouraged and supported by your family, faculty, staff, supervisor, mentor, coach, or pastor to pursue a PhD in biomedical research
  • Attention to details is your gift—or at least open to developing that skill set which is important in research
  • Open to changing your career aspiration from medical or nursing school (MD or RN) to pursuing a PhD in health-related & biomedical research
  • Maintaining good progress towards the required 3.0 GPA


The following are the SHARP requirements as defined by the RISE grant.

  • 3.0 GPA or better
  • Member of at least one of the federally recognized underrepresented communities (Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, African Americans, Hispanics (includes Filipinos), Alaskan / Native Americans, Students with documented disability, Pell Grant eligible)
  • US citizen, permanent resident, or from the US-affiliated Pacific Island entities and territories
  • Full-time student at University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo from Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or PhD levels
