Why Students Choose UH Hilo

On Hawaiʻi Island, inspiration is everywhere; it’s in the land, sky and sea, in the people we meet on forest trails, local markets, and in our classrooms. Built on the coastal slopes of the world’s largest mountain and centered in the Pacific Ocean, the University of Hawaiʻi Hilo challenges, empowers and inspires our students. As a university community, we draw our inspiration from the people we call ‘ohana, and the island we call home.

At UH Hilo, our students inspire us each and every day. Join us and find what inspires you!

Inspired by the ‘Āina

By connecting to the ‘Āina, I’ve learned to appreciate and care for what I am given. The meaning of ‘Āina is not only “the land”, but more importantly “one which provides” or “one which feeds”...Without the ‘Āina, we would have nothing...The ‘Āina has shaped me into the person I am today.

Inspired by Discovery

Working as a volunteer at the Butterfly Pavilion was one of the best experiences of my life. This opportunity allowed me to be around people that cared about biology as much as I do, and allowed me to share my passion with kids and adults. I continued to discover my passion for biology...To this day, you can find me at the zoo every week working in animal welfare, conservation, and education.

Inspired by Innovation

Through this movement of change and innovation that I was a part of and continue to perpetuate, I have learned that it is important to recognize all groups of a functioning system...I have been inspired to mentor the younger members of the STAR committee, who will eventually become leaders as well, to ensure that innovation and strengthening community bonds continues to motivate the goals of the committee for years to come.

Inspired by Each Other

There’s no such thing as a one man team: the most important discoveries in history, even if they were begun by a single person, took collaboration on an unimaginable scale...The reciprocity of working with others has always inspired me...For me, assisting each other, forming symbiotic relationships, and working together is the only way to reach true success.
