Office of Campus Technology (OCT)
The Office of Campus Technology (OCT) was originally organized as the Office of Technology and Distance Learning (OTDL) in July 1998 to consolidate computing center, academic computing and media services into one cohesive unit to emphasize the importance of technology in higher education and to facilitate the offering of campus programs to off-campus sites through distance learning (DL) technology. However, in recent years, it is apparent that to have a successful, sustainable and significant DL programs at UH Hilo, it must involve the academic departments and colleges to have the academic disciplines own and administer the DL program. The role of our division is to provide the technology (e.g., HITS, web-based, podcasting, and streaming) and training to facilitate the development and delivery of these programs. Thus, the name change truly reflects our division’s mission.
OCT is headed by the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) reporting directly to the Chancellor. Under CTO, the division is organized into three units:
- The Technology Services and Support (TSS) unit is responsible for supporting the Administrative Computing in BANNER, FMIS, and various other systems; telecommunication network both hardware and software, wireless and hardwired; network security; and network and various campus servers.
- The Instruction Technology and User Services (ITUS) unit consists of the Academic Computing Services; Help Desk; ITV/HITS Services; Classroom Technology Services; and Instructional Technology Services.
- The Publishing Services (PS) is made up of the Web Services and Print Publishing Services.
In addition OCT maintains a “Help Desk” to assist faculty/staff with their computer needs.
