NHERC UH Hilo College Credit Courses

NHERC offers UH Hilo credit courses for undergraduate students who are both classified and unclassified students. Hawai╩╗i Community College students, high school juniors and seniors, and community members are also welcome to take NHERC credit courses. All NHERC courses are regular UH Hilo courses that are offered off-site in Honoka╩╗a or Waimea.

Where Are They Now?

We are always thrilled when students who grew up here and took classes at NHERC go on to successfully graduate with a degree. This month we highlight Arwen Potochney.

Arwen Potochney

Arwen graduated from Honokaʻa High School in 2012 and went on to attend UH Hilo.  Although Arwen did drive in to Hilo for classes, she took full advantage of taking any class at NHERC that fit into her schedule.  At NHERC Arwen was able to take BUS 100 Intro To Business (3), MARE 171-171L Marine Biology-Diversity (3), Marine Biology Laboratory (1), UNIV 101 Paths to Acad/Lifelong Success (1), AG 230 Sustainable Agriculture (3), ANTH 320 Cross-Cultural Study Of Women (3) as well as a directed study course under the Heritage Center Coordinator Momi Naughton.  In May of 2016 Arwen graduated from UH Hilo with a bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology having been on the Deans list every semester she attended due to her 3.98 GPA!

Arwen is currently finishing out her responsibilities as a research assistant at UH Hilo while she prepares to move to Colorado to pursue her Master’s Degree in Biological Anthropology with a concentration in Forensic Anthropology at Colorado State University.┬á Upon graduation from graduate school, Arwen would like to work in a lab setting and apply her focus in Forensic Osteology to help save crimes and missing person cases.┬á

About attending UH Hilo, Arwen had this to say.

ÔÇťI made the right decision by choosing to attend the University of Hawai╩╗i at Hilo because the Anthropology program has hands-on-learning in a variety of disciplines, professors who genuinely help their students succeed, and the program prepared me to pursue a MasterÔÇÖs Degree in my field of interest.ÔÇŁ

Please join us in congratulating Arwen on her achievement and we wish the best for her in the future.
