Auditions for Hairspray

Location: UH Hilo Performing Arts Center

The University of Hawai’i at Hilo Performing Arts Center announces auditions for Hairspray, the 2002 Broadway musical, on January 16th and 17th, at 7:00 p.m. The show centers on bubbly, chubby teen, Tracy Turnblad whose dance talent breaks down racial barriers in Baltimore, Maryland in the 1960’s. Auditions are open to adult performers, from college-age to middle-age-plus. The show will open in mid-April 2012, with rehearsals taking place during evenings and weekend afternoons, beginning January 23rd.

Auditionees must report at 7:00 p.m. on one of the audition nights, so that they can participate in each segment of the audition: singing, dancing, and readings. Late-comers will not be considered. Actors interested in lead roles must prepare a 16-bar section of an audition song, either from Hairspray, or in the genre of 60’s rock music, and bring the sheet music to auditions. Chorus auditions will be comprised of singing in a group, using a song from the show that will be taught at the audition.

A copy of the script can be viewed in the back hallway of the Performing Arts Center beginning January 3rd. The musical will be directed by Jackie Seaquist, guest director from the Performing Arts Learning Center at Hilo High School. Musical director will be Cheryl “Quack” Moore, Board President of downtown Hilo’s Palace Theatre. The UHH Dance Ensemble will be the corps of dancers for the show, supplemented by those who are cast in the production.
